I'd vote for the 124 body. It was modern & safe for it's time, very comfortable, roomy enough & not overly sophisticated electronics-wise. That was a list price, waiting list car for several years for the new dealers. When Acura introduced the '96 RL ( I worked for them @ the time with my '87 300E parked way in back) their target for NVH (noise, vibration & harshness) was the '86 300E. As you can see to this day, these cars are still moving well in great numbers as long as maintained &/or repaired. The S classes are really nice but tend to be overkill on gadgets & stuff to go wrong.
'87 300E: sold after 11years @ 230k & still on the road somewhere in rural Tennessee.
'94 C220 with 93k totalled 10/06 by hit & run broadsiding monster truck: not a scratch or bruise for me
