anytime you open up the ac system, you should replace the reciever/drier. at the dealer even brand new cars with ac issues we replace the drier if the system is opened.

In Miami yes, in California there are just not that much moisture to be picked up by the desiccant in the dryer. I did a DIY compressor replacement a few years back. Didn't bother to replace the dryer/accummulator, closed it up immediately and had it evacuated the next day. This car is still running fine after 6 or 7 years and it was 6-7 years old at the time.

But I agree that it is a small insurance to an expensive job.

While looking at the W211 A/C info, I noticed it uses a Denso compressor, a Toyota enterprise no less. My Infiniti uses a Calsonic compressor. Looks like they have a JV with Delco called Calsonic-Harrison. I am not so sure we are paying for much more beyond the 3 point star branding today.

By the way, please update your profile with car and location info.
