Tire rattle at 55mph on 82 300D
I am a newbie and this is my first Mercedes and my first post. I am certain I will have a few more as I get to know the car better.
I recently bought an 82 Mercedes 300D from a friend in Atlanta. I had a a mechanic perform a laundry list of repairs (AC, belts, hoses, glowplugs, filters etc) in anticipation of driving the car back to Orlando, Florida. I had a weekend to get it back to Florida.
The car performed beautifully for the first half of the trip. My wife, who is obviously a saint, followed me in our car that we drove up in. I stopped for fuel and engaged the parking brake. Started the car up, disengaged the parking brake and went on my way. A mile or so down the road, she calls me and says that the left rear tire is vibrating or worse as if it were about to come off. I apply the brakes to pull over to side of the road and the entire rear starts shaking as if something is locked up.
I get out, check the lug nuts, they are ok. I put the car in neutral to "test" the parking brake "unengaged", and the car rolls fine. But, from here on the car can be driven no more than about 50 mph. Any higher and the rear end shakes violently until it slows to 45mph! Needless to say, the drivers on the Florida turnpike were not so thrilled with me.
I will call the mechanic tomorrow, but I find that, much like doctors, it is best to be armed with some information going in to the diagnosis. The rotors and pads are new. The parking brake pedal returns in one motion when released.
Does anyone have any insight into what could be causing this?
