Angry 780,000 Prius's

Thanks GM for giving Toyota the EV1 test bed to design what will be the largest selling car in the world.
I am glad that MD listens to it's customers.

The finest example of automobile engineering in the world
Floats like a CADI
Stings like a BMR
Stingy as a Prius
and.... all Mercedes Benz.

I was the early hybrid adapter and bought a 2001 Prius sight unseen thinking that I will help the cause. Now that I have the car for 6 years I am thinking the eventual task of replacing the NiMH battery assembly. I was shocked to learn that Toyota charge $5,000 to replace this battery. The real cost for this battery is probably around $500 and the initial cost for this car was $20,000.

So Toyota's policy is to sell you a new car instead of keeping as many hybrid on the road as possible. How environmentally friendly it is to produce a new car? How much energy does it take to make the car in the first place?
