I agree that all new MB models have less interior room relative to the outside dimensions when compared to previous models (absolute outside dimensions have gone up and down). However I would not call this "poorly carved", the point is the higher standards for safety, including side impacts. I believe the sentence was not even intended to be interpreted literally.

Think about the time you have for the airbags and the crumple zone dimensions already when testing according to current safety tests, not to mention real traffic accidents where MB makes its best to be number one.

The W220 is smaller in exterior dimensions compared to the W140, but iirc, it was slightly larger in interior dimensions.

Interestingly when they put the US DOT bumpers on the car the W126 is slightly longer by about 10mm I think.

The most interior room of any Mercedes (short of the 600 limo) is the current R Class in long wheebase form. And it is available with a state of the art diesel engine.
