Lot of Mercedes cars are sold in central states short time after the warranty expires due to lack of reliable service there. It is common service issue, that leaky $10 o-rings on injector pumps are resolved with $1000 rebuild job, or $150 injector tips are replaced with whole injectors for $2000.
Don't buy diesel if you don't have reliable mechanic in your area, or are good in DIY.
That is true, I owned a Peugeot, Fiat and VW diesel while living in Panhandle Texas and repair all of them myself.

But due to farming equipment, diesels are actually very familiar to most shops. I was able to resurface an aluminum head easily because someone had a large surface grinder. A shop made a strut top cap opener for my Fiat. Most shops knows how to install a Helicoil in an aluminum block for instance. So there are benefits living in the farm belt.

If you're in the USA, you'll wait forever because the last MB diesel wagon sent here was 1987.
