722.9 transmission disassembled pics and other MB shop pics
I thought I would post some pics from my work and since there are alot of threads about the 722.9 tranny I thought I would post some pics of some I have disassembled to replace the b1 and b3 clips. basically most of the pics are from the internals of the 722.9 tranny and some other pics i took
this is the bottom of the tranny where the pump sits. also where the b1 clip sits that is replaced. when the clip comes out of place, it causes the tranny to jerk at low speeds
these are the internals of the tranny that have to be removed to get to the clips
this is the case of the tranny and valve body. this is from a e500 that had a hard bang when coming to a stop
in the middle of this pic is where the b3 clip sits which is also replaced when the b1 clip is replaced. i think I got it correct, if it isnt the b3 its the b1. either way the clips are the same. behind it to the left is the k1 assembly which another tech replaced yesterday in a CLK.
this is the pic of the engine with the tranny removed
here is the tranny out of the car and on the stand before it is torn apart
here is the torque converter
here is usually how we know if the b1 and b3 clips need replacing. what you are looking at is the adaptation values. if any one shift point is at -15-20 there is an issue, and usually when the 3-2 and 2-1 downshift are at -20 that means the clips have come out of place.
here are the clips and springs that is replaced 2 clips and 2 springs
here is a engine and tranny removed from an SLK from last year that I did. the engine was making a bad clacking noise and MB wanted us to tear it down and check the internals. i didnt end up pulling it apart, but later found out that the harmonic balancer was coming apart internally and the timing was off causing the noise.
this is a pic of my tool box and the tech next to me too box
here is a forward pic of my box, just to give you an idea, I paid over $5000 for that box.
here is our alignment rack, there is also one on the otherside. we have a tech who does all of the alignments and most suspension work.
here is a pic of some rotors and brake flush. i was about to do pads and rotors all the way around and brake lines on a 00 s500 with 140k miles
this is a pic of the tech next to me doing a brake flush
well hope to get other pics up.
also is there anything that any of you want to see at the dealer that you havent seen that i can take a pic of, just let me know

sorry for the quality, it was from my camera phone. that day was slow, it was a monday. anyway have been a tech for several years now.
anyway with the clips, actually it isnt the most common failure. the only cars i have done them on have been the E500. some other techs have done them on the ML, GL and R class, but i havent yet. but we do more valve bodies then anything.
this is actually my third tool box since working down in florida. that tool box i got at a discounted price as i traded my old one for it and the mac tool guy had it in his truck with minor damage to it. still all in all paid over $5000 for the box.
again if there is any kind of pics you want to see from the dealer let me know

Thanks for the photos. On a 722.6 transmission, what is the most common failure and what can be done to prevent it?
actually the most common thing i see on the 722.6 is fluid leaks causing erratic shifting. usually the fix is replacing the pan gasket and electrical connecter
