300d wont turn off

I just got my first benz. it is a 1983 300d I have to open the hood and push a lever to make the car turn off sometimes. what is usually wrong when this occurs

Its been a while, the basic system has a vacuum operated valve that does the same thing you do when you push the stop button. You have to track it down to the ign switch or the vacuum element and things in between.

Very common problem, usually caused by a vacuum leak or a shut-off valve failure.

Most of the time the vacuum lines got pulled from fittings. Check in the oil filter area. There is bunch of fittings there and they got pulled easily by "mechanic" changing the filter.
If all the lines under the hood look good, the leak is probably on the door locks. Plug the tubing going behind firewall to separate that.
