Are you ready for this? Your TeleAid is never really shut off when you unsubscribe. The crash reporting still remains operational by law. Now the other news, law enforcement can track and or listen in, on your car. If I run across the link for all this I'll post it up.
I dont know where you are getting your info from, I never renewed after my first year, and have never had any display issues. The only time I had a issue was at "vehicle delivery time" it said "tel aid not activated"
I have been in areas that had no coverage, analog, digital, TDMA, CDMA, or GSM and no message came on. I have also attempted to place a call to check, and all I got was a intercept. The intercept was almost imposible to get rid of. If you think you have "crash alert or any other service" you have been lied to, or reading too many forums MB would be touting it or billing for it. There was just a post that claimed for $1600 they got a digital retrofit and lifetime service which I dont believe. MB contracts this service out and Road Aid is just forwarded and if they are on line they can probably interrigate your vehicle computer, It is a basic cellular phone, and analog was chosen for best overall coverage, it is interfaced with a GPS reciever that transmits data to a ATT based call center in Dallas, no pay no service. A wire tap can be instituted on any device , cellular, home phone etc. better wrap tin foil around your antenna. You are confused, with the FCC edict to allow 911 service to non paying subscribers, and their descision to allow analog channels to shut off and probably convert to GSM since the frequencies are similar. I spent 35 years at Motorola and was there for the first Cellular call! If I get conflicting info I will apologize!
