Importing Merc into Europe. Type approval question

Gentlemen (and Ladies)

I have a 2001 Merc E240 Elegance. This was built in Germany for export to Saudi Arabia and is a Gulf Model (bigger radiator etc). I have ran the VIN through the Russian VIN checker site.

It has 'emission control system unregulated".

The VIN is WDBJF62H72B388651.

I work in Saudi but will be coming back to UK at some time. Any UK or European Mercedes dudes out there who can advise whether I can import this car into the UK? (Can I get a European certificate of type approval conformity?)

I am not sure whether I could get UK registration as I dont think this car was built to Euro type approval.

Cheers

R

I think it has the USA spec motor and no Euro compliant emission control system.

Indeed this seems a "Gulf states model" with code 623. The data card also reads 918: emission control system unregulated. What does this actually mean? I cannot believe it would have no lambda sensor.

Whatever the emission codes are, the important part is UK law.
I've been "importing" diesel vehicles to California, that has strict emission laws, but as long as the car comply with original requirements, it can be register in California. Check with UK customs.

Looks like the Single Vehicle Approval preparation and test may be one of the governing laws, in this case, along with other things:

used cars for sale UK new cars commercial vehicles

As I understand it, from a quick google search, These could include possibly, and not be limited, to:

MOT testing and fees, registration + number plates, road tax,
emission and noise tests, addition of a security immobiliser, and possibly a certificate of conformity needed to be provided by Daimler Chrysler, shipping and terminal fees, VAT, and possibly a MPH speedometer and proper lighting.

There appear to be questions also, about how long you have had the car abroad, it's mileage, and whether you plan to permanently reside in UK and plan to keep the car for private use (like "settler's effects" in Canada)

I'd take nothing for granted, here. good luck
