advice needed for tickover/idle problem

Most of the time my '95 W124 E200 wagon runs perfectly, normally I just turn the key, don't use any throttle (gas) & it starts first time. Just recently on occassions when trying to start it, the car won't start unless I give it a bit of throttle (gas) whereupon it will run, but it has no idle/tickover & just stalls as soon as the revs drop to just under 1000rpm. Then after a while the car starts perfectly first time again & runs without any problems. I originally wondered if it was some kind of immobilisor problem, as I had a similar problem with a different car I owned once. I got out of the car, locked the doors, then unlocked them & tried to start the car. Lo & behold it started, but I don't know if it was just coincidence. Any help or advice really would be gratefully received as my wife has to use the car this evening & I don't want her having any problems out late at night with it. What would cause these symptoms.
Thanks in advance guys.

When was the fuel filter changed, if at all? It sound like the fuel filter is partially blocked, making the fuel pump work harder. The other common problem is the fuel pump relay. Hope this gives you an idea on where to start.

I haven't a clue as to when the fuel pump filter was changed, probably never. Where is the relay & would this only cause an intermittent problem at tickover? Thanks.Nigel
