After reading the first two posts earlier today I was at the local dealer getting parts and talked to the GM about this. He said that MB was being very firm about the costs however they were offering the lifetime contract for less than 200 bucks afterwards. Also, each car has a different cost, based on their specific electronics and he thought the SLK was the most expensive.
Further, I ran the posts and a bit of additional digging past my friend who is an Assistant State Attorney General [from whom I bought a Benz project] and his comments were that because there were 1) safety issues involved and 2) advertising of services that did not mention required technology upgrades there were already several state's Attorneys General that were looking at this issue, not just with Mercedes but with other Auto manufacturers and the Cellular companies as well.
Seems that in their zeal to go all digital that cellular companies failed to take into account many different services that were base analog. This was further complicated when the Cellular industry pushed the FCC into new rules in 2002. Note, 2002 is when manufacturers first knew of the change to all digital cellular service.
Being smart is knowing the difference, in a sticky situation between a well delivered anecdote and a well delivered antidote - bear.
