A man pulled out an assault rifle and started shooting people. Two minutes later, 20 were dead or dying. He reloaded, left the cafe, and shot anything that moved.
I particularly remember a mother and her 2 daughters aged 6 and 3. He told her to get on her knees. As she did so, she said, "Please don't hurt my babies." He shot and killed her and the 3-year-old. The older girl ran behind a nearby tree. He fired at her, hitting her in the shoulder. Then he walked over to the tree and killed her.
The final toll was 35 dead, many more wounded and maimed. Our government had abolished the death penalty in 1967, so the killer still lives and breathes in prison.
As a reaction, laws were passed to disarm the entire population. Mountains of guns were turned into scrap metal; a small amount of compensation was paid for their surrender. Thousands more guns were secretly buried by their non-compliant owners. Now you may only have a gun if you need it for your job, or if you are a licensed member of a pistol club.
11 years later we have never had a similar incident. And then we hear about the shootings at Virginia Tech and some of the responses were, "If only I had been carrying my gun with me ..."
Our police are not as fearful about guns in the hands of the public. Your police have an attitude problem.
