'96 C220 question

I am thinking of buying one of my clients' '96 C220 for $4.5K.

the car has 110K miles on it. Antenna is broken so I'd replace that.

The body looks in GREAT condition, not a scratch or ding on it, seems to drive fine, but the SIS light is on for about 10 seconds after starting the car, and the Check Engine light is on constantly. I also smell some fuel smell after driving it. Seems to run rich. Owner says that it needs an EGR valve replaced on it, but still passed emissions last year.

What do you guys think? Looking for a good gas mileage, nice car as my dailydriver just died.

I am actually thinking about picking up a 96 c220 myself. The 96 does not have the head gasket or wiring harness issue, and has the rock solid 722.4 transmission.

I'd certainly get a pre-purchase inspection, get it on a lift, and pull the codes to see what the CEL is for. Does the owner have maintenance records?

I think this would be a great daily driver if it checks out ok. The car you get for the price point is a great deal IMO.

I am setting up an inspection at the mercedes dealership within the next few days and see what they say. The EGR valve replacement me and my buddy could probably handle replacing, as him and I work on our vettes without too much trouble, and another buddy of mine is an ex mercedes tech, if we need him..

I hope it turns out well. I really like this type of mercedes and nothing in the area anywhere in that price range.

Sadly, no go on the C220. Took my mechanic buddy with me and he instantly noticed tons of issues with the interior and electrical issues, so I did not even bother to take it to the dealer for an inspection. THe search continues.
