Hi, My name is Heyward. I am new to this forum. About 6 months ago I purchased a 1989 420 SEL, which cosmetically inside & out is in great shape. It runs great as well, except for a few concerns. At a dead idle it seems to miss. Anywhere above dead idle it responds fine. The front end seems to need some repair. It squeaks and grinds, but holds straight in the road. The transmission has a small front seal leak. My mechanic (who has been working on Mercedes for 70 years) says I am looking at around two grand in repairs to correct these problems. I am wondering, at 17 miles to the gallon should I hold or fold?
Thanks,
Heyward

Well, if you love your particular 420SEL, then do it. It feels awesome when you get your car done right and running well.

17MPG? That's better than I'm getting. I get 15.5 to 16.
Good luck.

Run of the mill repairs for an old car. If you can put the car in good order for $2k you shouldn't dump it. If spending $2k scares you, dump it and buy a new honda.

Since you already own the car, I’d spend the $2K - after getting a list of what he intends to do and getting a second opinion on the cost and viability of those repairs. Unless of course, you trust him.

$2K really isn’t that much money (easy for me to say since it’s your money), and you could end up selling it at a loss AND getting another car that needs $2K or more in repairs. If you do fold, and $2K bills are undesirable, I'd recommend a pre-purchase inspection at a dealership, which should be done anyway. The pre-purchase inspection helps you on many levels. For one, it helps lower the number of surprises that one might encounter after the purchase. Secondly, it’s a good negotiating tool. Thirdly, it helps you determine which cars you should walk/run away from.

You didn't say what you paid for the car, and I'm not asking you. I think the most important thing to keep in mind is this: Do not put more money into the car than it would be worth on the open market. This can be said for any used car, even a Mercedes. I leaned that lesson the hard way with the 1st used Benz I bought.

However, yours is a late model W126 and is considered by many to be one of the "last great Mercedes". For that reason alone, I think it would be OK to stretch the above rule a bit.
