!995 E320

I have a 1995 E320 with 179,000k (112,000 miles) on the clock.

It's in very good condition. The last major work was when a head gasket went about 18 months ago.

I'm told that the factory recommend replacing the transmission at 200,000k.

It'll take me about a year to reach that figure.

1. Should I have the transmission done?
2. What further life can I expect from an E320 of this age? Could I expect to get another 179,000k without incurring really major expense?
3. If I decide to replace it at this stage, what should I be looking for? My MB dealer thinks that MBs made after 1998 are not the equal mechanically of those made before that date. I have no way of telling whether this is true, but if I bought a new car I would be covered by warranty.

You may wish to ask the person who told you about the "factory recommended transmission replacement" to tell you who the source of this information is. I have never heard of any manufacturer recomending the replacement of a transmission in a passenger car as standard maintenance.

Personally, I would not consider replacing a transmission that was in working order.

There's no such recommendation by the factory. Whoever is saying that apparently has some personal agenda. Drive it carefully and maintain it properly and it could easily go way more than 200k. Your transmission is a 722.3xx. It is much more robust and considerably cheaper to rebuild than the 722.6 5 speed electronic transmissions - which came in 1996 on V8s and in 1997 on everything else.

I used to own 93 E300D with 340,000 miles, now we have 97 E300D with 234,000 and I am not worrying about the transmission.
Life of that gas engine? The guy on ebay was just listing one of those in 97 model with 280,000. Says running perfect.

You can replace transmission fluid for 300$ and save 6000$ on transmission replacement.

that's low mileage for a 95e320, with that mileage the car is just breaking in. it wouldn't hurt to change the transmission fluid/filter at this time. i can see your car going 300000 miles without any major complications.

This transmission is not electronic so it does not cost as much for fluid change or even replacement.

1995 E320

Many thanks for replies and advice. I'll run my E320 and won't worry about the transmission.

I really like this car and am glad that it's got some good life in it yet!
