Exclamation HOSED by Interstate Battery

I'm highly irritated at the moment...

Is the battery in your benz in the passenger compartment? Then read on.

As a preventative measure (my battery now being 6+ years old) I decided to change it before it puked and I ended up having to call roadside assist and paying the premium price. Besides, you know they always fail at the worst possible time and place.

I've long been an Interstate battery fan, so I sourced one locally, set up a backup battery issue to keep from having to reset everything, and then I notice that the stupid new battery -- exactly the one their literature and website indicated was the proper fit.

While the battery looks as though it is the proper size and anode arrangement to bolt in and connect, there is absolutely no provision for connecting the external tube to vent gasses from it...so they would be released into the passenger compartment. Nice, isn't it?

I won't be able to talk to the dealer until tomorrow, but I'll bet if they even take it back it will be with a signficant "handling charge".

Anyway, I just wanted to alert the rest of you so that if your battery isn't under the hood, you can avoid/ignore Interstate.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

I hear you. They should take it back without a charge, but with an apology. It isn't the "correct" battery and they've cost you the one irreplaceable commodity we have - TIME. Now you got to make TWO trips to their store and explain how their battery isn't properly vented, and for this application, probably isn't safe. I can hear the clerk now, "it's OK, the venting is safe, they wouldn't sell them this way otherwise . . . ." The OEM battery has the tube because it's needed. Not because there's spare tubing all over Spain (where the OEM battery is made). They should refund every cent. It's this kind of stuff that turns a 20 minute job into an all day - three cross town trip - pain in the neck.

The MB battery is not that much of a "hose job" They come out, take old, resync everything. I consider the convenience, time, roadsiside charges for the battery, no labor!

The hole for the vent hose on the MB battery is on the end (whichever end you need).

The vent for the CORRECT Interstate is in the middle, is a stub, and is oval shaped.

In either the battery MUST NOT vent via the caps.

Hey, folks.

Okay, I have a little egg on my face. My initial mistake of not seeing the vent was in part because I didn't tear off all of the plastic that was sealing the new battery. I figured the design would be at least similar to the OEM so I only tore the plastic off the one end.

The vent is there, but nowhere near the stock one and it doesn't look anything like it. I found it because I was stunned that Interstate wouldn't have a vent provision, so last night I went on-line looked at some other MBZ replacement batteries made by Johnson Controls and it turns out the vent is in the middle of the side of the top between the anodes, plus it's recessed and has an odd shape (sort of a pointed oval). Basically it is too large/too far away for the stock vent hose to reach or to fit. Let me see what I can cobble together over the weekend (short of drilling a new hole in the body) and I'll update thereafter.

Ah, mid-level update. E-mailed the manufacturer, found out I was supposed to get a VENT TUBE KIT from the dealer when I purchased the battery. Figures it would be a dealer screwup, not the manufacturer.

So, in amending my original post, if you decide to go Interstate and save some bucks, be sure they include the vent tube kit BEFORE you leave the store.

Peter, I agree with what you said, I'm just to familiar with Murphy to leave it to chance, which 's the main reason I was trying to be proactive. (Saving $60 was just a side-benefit, plus I have a trick that I think will avoid the whole panoply of resets.) I know another member who wanted to be proactive, he called MB assist, they won't change it before it dies. If you want to do that you have to take it to the dealer and wait -- and pay the same as MB roadside assit. That seems kind of stupid to me.

Take care and enjoy the properly-vented ride,
Greg

So did my 1961 VW Beetle. This is an outrage!

So, Mods, I'm curious: what was the point of changing the subject line?

It was a pun, you know, since there is the vent HOSE issue?
