Borrow a timing light and check it. See if it is on spec or set a little bit retarded.

Clamp the inductive pickup on number one cylinder spark plug wire and point the strobe light at the timing mark. Be careful not too close to the radiator fan.

Watch for that pinging in the engine as you drive it. Most frequently it will occur at low RPM and you open throttle for more power. If you can hear it, you need more octane number.

Some engines may even need Octane 93 to stop pinging. So Octance 91 is not a magic number.

If I understand the question, the next time you get gasoline, fill it with premium.

I’ve got to be missing something here. We’re talking about you adding gasoline to a gas tank, correct? If you’re wondering about the ramifications of adding premium gasoline (91/92/93 octane) to a tank that has some mid range gasoline (89 octane), it will not cause a problem. It's all gasoline.

Besides, is there an alternative? If you drive the car until it stops running due to a lack of fuel and have it towed to a station for more gas, there will still be *some* fuel in the tank.

Nothing personal here, but if you can't afford to care properly for the car, you can't afford the car. It's almost axiomatic that the one who looks for the cheapest solution is the one who pays the most in the end.

Take care and enjoy the premium ride,
Greg

Da Happy, you really think that would help? Newbies almost never use the search function and they seem hardly to ever scroll into the forums where they might find a sticky, even at that they probably wouldn't read it.

No matter what you do you're still going to have people posting about it, it's just human nature.

And in all honesty, I'm not sure how reputable Wikipedia is; anyone can post into it, so it's kind of a crapshoot.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

It also tends to be very P.C. w/ most of its "data." (And I don't mean Poter Cable!)

Don't believe everything you think
