transmission interchangability

hello i have a e240 2.6 v 6 avantgarde with tranny problems ,ie no drive at all fwd or reverse, turn it off wait 10 mins it goes for 5 mins then looses all drive again, when it goes it uses all the gears not just the limp mode, when it fails the engine just revs, the box is a722.696 tiptronic, when people talk about their boxes here they only use like 722.6 ,why ,is it that the bell housing is interchangable ?i am looking for a replacement box but all i have found are boxes with differing last two numbers of the six,any help would be most welcome, thank you and regards alan

Whether the bell housing were the same size is the old question. The 722.6xx question is whether the electronics and software are interchangeable and it's unlikely that you will be able to find anyone that answer such questions with a high degree of accuracy and confidence. Why not rebuild the one you have? You would know that it's going to work.

Getting really off topic but you are collecting cars using 722.6xx transmission? EPC should give a lot more hits, just randomly picked W220 E55 AMG Kompressor with 722.643.

And Alan, glad to hear you are getting well. Looks like a bit of bad luck with the hit but still probably would have been a lot worse with many other car models.

tiptronic, thats a clue

tiptronic, has a auto clutch at leased in a porsche that I slightly know about
touch the gear shift and the auto clutch trips in = no drive in any gear
so your problem may not be in the box
but in the out side control switch or wire or relay ect or the clutch it's self
