Glad to hear you're okay, it's always better to live to buy another car.
It's nice to think that someday criminals will get their due, but with our society that happens far too infrequently.
FWIW, I have a whole litany I go through when selling a car/motorcycle to a private party. Meet inside a public place, Starbucks in a grocery store is perfect, photocopy their license and mail it to myself (obviously the public place has to have a mailbox, I have a SASE ready for the purpose), and talk with them. Use the BS meter, call it off if necessary, if all feels good then you can proceed outside to the test drive etc. When people call I tell them this is how it will go down, serious buyers never care, the flakes flake out first.
This is a lot of effort, but it increases safety a great deal as well.
Good luck, if they find it I hope it's not trashed.
If someone steals my E I hope they fix the front end before it's returned.
Take care and enjoy (the replacement?) ride,
