Not the worst car ever, I hope, please help

Hello all,
I am new here, and I want to purchase a used mercedes, but I need some help in which model to buy. First of all I want a sedan to transport my family (wife and 2 kids) SAFELY, and not too bad on gas, as my wife's LR discovery '04 is pretty bad. I am not sure how much I want to spend, but I am open to suggestions. I would prefer not a money pit, but I was thinking about s420's, s500's, 560 sel's etc. I just don't enough about which model to buy, but I would love some good advice, or some threads or whatever. I appreciate all of your help in buying a good dependable mercedes, despite what the other disgruntled member(s) say.
I appreciate your help and assistance in this quest. I usually post on pelican, and I hope that you can be just as wonderful as they are over there. Thanks again,
jonathan

If you want an estate, I'd recommend a W124 E320 or 300TE.

If you want a saloon, a handful of W126s and W124s will suit your criterion pretty well.

They're still extremely well built and extremely reliable and will get the job that you want done.

If you don't mind performance and want fuel economy, get a W124 300D or 300E or a W126 300SDL or a 300SE/SEL. Stray away from the V8 models as you won't get anything higher than about 22 MPG on the highway.

If you want to save from being a money pit, I wouldn't recommend W210s or W140s as they are a lot more complicated than their predecessors and have more to go wrong and aren't as reliable.

Agreeing with chinny4290 here -> look for W124 and W126 (maybe the last of the great Mercedes, at least for the time being). Have a look on those sub-forums too, just scroll down until you get to the sedans.

As usual, I suggest the w126. Fairly easy to work on, knowledgable w126 community, service manual available from MB for $20.

Do a search for "Pre-purchase inspection". Where are you located?

thanks

You input is greatly appreciated. I think that I have decided on a 126, precisely a 560 sel, but I can't seem to figure out what the difference is between this and a 420 sel. If any would like to chime in, I would greatly appreciate it. If any would choose the 420 over the 560 I would like to know why too?
Thank you all,
Jonathan

The 420SEL has a smaller 4.2L V8 and a few other differences, like regular rear shocks vs self-levelling on the 560. Otherwise, SDT(Same Damn Thing).

You might to look at the 300SE/SEL as well. Six cylinder straight 6 without the timing chain issues of the V8's. You will also get a little better gas mileage. Some may argue that the power is the same, but a 300SEL has been fine for me. We had the 560SEL when it was new, and I feel the difference is no big deal. What I am trying to say is that the 300SEL will have adequate power.

Whatever you do, get your family out of that unstable LR Disco death trap. Your word "SAFELY" is important here. The 126 is a great tank, depending on how young your kids re, you may want to have it retrofitted with LATCH anchors for car seats.

The 420 will give better MPG and less complexity with the rear suspension. I am not sure about the 4.2 but IIRC the 5.6 has a timing chain issue that crops up at around 90K or so. The 4.2 is noticeably slower than the 5.6 but more than adequate for hauling the family. The 126 and the 124 are IMO the last of the great reliable MB products.

Just remember the "Pre-purchase inspection". If you have read some of the recent posts, one of our "posters" ( I won't use members) failed to do so and got hammered for it. I just purchased a used r230 and spent four months looking and having inspections done. I finally chose a 2005 as it still had ample factory warranty remaining. The engineering and electronics although still intimidating is mind boggling. Good luck

I agree with both of these statements. Of all my cars, I love my w126. Great car.
