Update following dealer visit
Sorry to repeat myself somewhat because I already related some of the following info in a reply to debbibaron. So for those few of you hovering on the edges of your seats:
The service manager had a tech interrogate the car with the Star Diagnostics and had the tech give him a printout. I stood beside the tech and watched everything he did. He also used a green handled dipstick which gave him the depth of the oil in millimeters - he said perfect at 132mm. He also looked under the car for leaks, but it was never on a lift, just parked outside the service bays.
After looking at the printout, that manager remarked that oil consuption has clearly increased and it's close to the point when it get's MB's attention. He said he has to fill out a form to submit some of that printed-out info to MB and they will tell him what to do next. There are 3-4 possibilities that I mentioned previously from memory.
Another thing he said was a few years ago, he had the authority to just give me another (re-built) engine. However, some large dealers were doing so much of this that MB tightened their requirements so a dealer could no longer do that on it's own.
As always, any learned feedback would be greatly appreciated.
