Question Remote Unlocking via a... CELLPHONE?

Is it true?

I've received an email saying that somebody actually did it and it worked!! I for one still do not believe this one bit

Its something like, if your car is locked (with the keys inside) and you're in the middle of nowhere or cant get home for some reason, all you got to do is call someone who's at home.. ..on their cellphone via your cellphone, and ask them to press the 'unlock' button on your spare car remote unit and voila... your car is unlocked?

Your opinions please

Question Are these keys smart or not?

Off topic, but I thought one of the reasons M-B calls it the "Smart Key" is because the car will not lock if the key is inside?

This discussion also came up because someone wanted to start their car, lock it, and let it warm up. One guy suggested using 1 key to start it, and then your spare to lock it, but a guy with a 2000 S500 said his 2nd key would not lock the car when his 1st key was in the ignition.

I always lock and unlock my car with the smart key, and have never experimented around with this. Don't our cars somehow recognise even the key lying on the seat and will resist completely locking using the dashboard switch?

And what happens if we leave the key inside, exit the vehicle, and press the manual door lock knob down and close the door?

The Smart-Key draws its power by induction from the key ring on the dash, if the key is in the car (seat, glovebox, etc.) you can lock or unlock it. If it is in the ignition no!

I think it was you who suggested how to do it, and I found it successful! Start the car w/ the SmartKey, remove the metal blade key, lock the door from outside w/ the blade key, and voilĂ*!

Don't believe everything you think

A Keyless-Go car is of course different, cannot lock if the key is somewhere inside the car (cabin or trunk).
