On the bright side, recalls were much more infrequent 25+ years ago. I suspect all automakers avoided them even more so than they do now. As a result, I suspect there are at least a few less gremlins lurking to endanger us humans than would be otherwise.

'87 300E: sold after 11years @ 230k & still on the road somewhere in rural Tennessee.

'94 C220 with 93k totalled 10/06 by hit & run broadsiding monster truck: not a scratch or bruise for me

Recalls are also not as expensive as one might think. Having all those cars in the service department helps to sell other services and parts, etc. A recall for a relatively minor repair can be profitable all things considered.
