Charles, are you saying that my 7 yr battery will be aided if I buy this and attach it? the car runs great now and has no signs of a problem, but I do only use it for mainly short trips will the tender always keep it fully charged? Is that the theory and it's better for the life of the battery?

GailGolf-This Battery Tender device DOES Maintain a good working battery. Not only will it keep it fully charged, it monitors the battery, through a diagnostic check and will let you know if something is wrong. Mostly though, it Trickle Charges the Battery and Desulfates. Gets rid of the icky stuff inside the battery. For <$40 or so, you get a great bargain. Again, I use it for my MB and my Harley Davidson.

The battery that is on my 190e was purchaced in either 94 or 96 (Its a duralast, from autozone).

Havnt had the car that long, just put it on after the interstate in it died.
The sticker fell off i guess the last time i had the battery out (looking at relays to see why it wont stay running...)

If your car is showing warning lights or anything for low bat while its running, wouldnt that be the alternator? If it starts fine, i would think that the alternator on its last legs. It is obviously keeping it charged enough to start it, but cant handle the load of everything else in the car.

I don't think there is any such thing as "average battery life". The original MB battery on my '97 E 300 D was replaced in early 2010. By my calculation that was 12 years. I have had a Motocraft go for about as long, and I have had low priced batteries die in three years. When I had a small fleet of vehicles to maintain I found that the best determinant of battery life is the warranty time. They usually went bad a few months before the warranty expired. I decided that the manufacturer had it calculated so they would sell another with only a few dollars off for proration of the remaining warranty time.

Holy cow! I drive an '02 and am still on my original battery! Then again, lately I've had some shifting problems. I was convinced it was the Transmission conductor plate, but I've also heard that a low battery can cause that problem. Hmm...

I'd say at a dozen years of age that battery has about run its course.

I would change it at first sign of trouble.

I have a battery charger at home which has the tickle-charge feature. Should I hook it up to condition the battery once in a while?

things have changed, batteries only last 3-5 years now
get a good battery with high CCA (cold cranking amps) for all seasons.
hopefully you dont have a slow battery drain in the car
