There are no guarantees with any car, the odds of a repair just differ.
Some people have very bad luck with Japanese cars. Honda had transmission issues with many 1999-2003 V6 vehicles, such that a class action suit forced them to extend the warranty to 109,000 miles, and now Toyota seems to be having transmission issues with its new FWD six-speed.
In the Toyota case, entire transmissions are simply being swapped out for an upgraded unit in cars with just a couple thousand miles on them. Of course, since they've caught this issue early in the run, and the upgraded unit may not have the same issues, they may quickly put this problem behind them.
Mercedes had similar teething problems with the seven-speed when it was new.
I've been lanching some reliability research that, by updating promptly and quarterly, will quickly spot such problems.
