S420 or Very Clean 560SEL

in my seach for an S420 I ran across a very clean 560SEL, which I've always liked the 126 body style and it's tank like construction - any comments, which would you choose?

Depends what your after, the 126 if in good condition will be easier to maintain and less costly.

W126, hands down. The W140 is a handsome and gorgeous car and is fortunately still following Merc's original "Money No Option" ideaology. Unfortuantely, it's probably significantly less reliable than the W126. So I am entirely with you if you get a 560SEL. I always wanted one but ended up with a W124 E320 Coupe .

If you consider the 560SEL, make sure the self leveling hydropneumatic rear suspension was taken care of, the timing chain was kept up to date, all fluids were changed...yea, basically make sure the car was taken care of (full service history, carfax, indy mechanic inspection)

If it's reliability you're looking for get a Toyota. If you are looking for something that makes you feel good even if you spend a ton of money get a Benz. Oh yeah a w126 will be cheaper to repair because it's easier but you will end up spending on repairs as much as you would have spent on a good used or even new Toyota.

w126 all the way...it's got less gadgets then the w140...less things to go wrong...and it's more handsome!

That's a difficult decision, and I'd be thrilled with either one. In fact, I saw a 560SEL for sale in the newspaper just recently for only about $6000; I think you'll pay a little more than that for the S420, but not a significant amount.

If everything else is equal (miles per year, service history, overall aesthetics) I would buy the S420 simply because it has fewer years on it.
