Question 1992 300TE 4Matic Vs. 2000 E320 4Matic

We're in the middle of trying to decide what wagon to replace our Volvo with and are looking at a 1992 300TE 4Matic and a 2000 E320 4Matic for Mercedes. Certainly the cost is different, but I'm more interested in reliability. A few years ago I had a 1990 300TE 4M and it was always in the shop. Any thoughts on the relative quality of these two models? The mileage is about the same (150K) but the 2000 seems to have been very well taken care of even with the high miles. Another option is a 1998 wagon, but it seems like these are considered fairly low in reliability.

thanks for any insigts

W124 4matics are a disaster.

W210 versions are fine.

Without hesitation I would recommend the 2000 E320 4matic. As Kent wrote, the earlier ones were pretty bad - At some point, Mercedes completely re-designed their AWD vehicles, so the "newer" ones are fine.

However, the RWD W124s have proven to be very reliable.

Welll... if the price is not object, definitely go with 210.
4-Matic in 124 was limited time only -engaged at low speeds and certain situations. Constant switching on/off under the load doesn't last in any machine, so 210 is having 4-Matic all the time.
Bottom line -when the transfer case in 124 blows up -you continue the driving on 2 WD mode and my believe is that how most of those 4-Matic drive as of today.
When it brakes on 210 -you are stranded. I had front CV joint going bad on my 210 wagon and that turn to be very costly repair due to the fact that the smallest part MB sells is whole axle.
