How to unlock your car with just your cell phone.

Have you locked your keys in the car? Does your car have
remote keyless entry? This may come in handy someday. Good reason to own a
cell phone: If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at
home, call someone at home on their cell phone from your cell phone. Hold
your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at
your home press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone on
their end. Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your
keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away,
and if you can reach someone who has the other "remote" for your car, you
can unlock the doors (or the trunk).

But, I don't think this will work with our cars.

I just tried it with the Keyless-Go system on my SL. Does not work.

From what I heard there are different systems on different models.
Our ML will unlock from 100 feet away and direction is not an issue.
E-classe works from about 10 feet and if you don't have sensor in the view -it will not work.
Might be worth trying. Sounds like small project for Saturday.

THIS DOES NOT WORK...it's a myth that's been circulating on the web for some time now....

Comforting though it may be to imagine you can unlock your car door in an emergency by receiving a distant signal via your cell phone, it can't possibly work — not with the technology as it now stands, at any rate.

Here's why:

Your remote car key operates by sending a weak, encrypted radio signal to a receiver inside the automobile, which in turn activates the door locks.

Since the system works on radio waves, not sound, the only conceivable way a signal from your spare remote could be picked up by one cell phone and relayed to your car's onboard receiver by another would be if both phones were capable of sending and receiving at exactly the same frequency as the remote itself — which they can't be, given that all remote entry devices operate at frequencies between 300 and 500 MHz, while all mobile phones, by law, operate at 800 MHz and higher.

It's apples vs. oranges, in other words. Your cell phone can no more transmit the type of signal needed to unlock a car door than your remote key is capable of dialing up your Aunt Mary ... though no one can predict what miracles the future may bring.

Wow I had to read it a couple of times, the only way to unlock your car via telephone is to use Tel-AId where they call the built in cell phone. MB remotes from 92 on were infrared, and the later ones were a combination of radio signals and infra red. There is no way of sending those down the telephone link from a remote.

i think your friend may have been lying to ya about that....it's really NOT possible....the car's remote uses MUCH TOO LOW of a frequency to be passed through any type of cell phone, PDA's included...just do some searching online and you can verify it's improbability...

Any details about this experiment? If the car was using a fixed code and you first read the IR signal from your key with your PDA/cell phone application, then later on send the same stored IR signal from your PDA/cell phone application, you might succeed opening the doors.

MB is using rolling codes, then this trick does not work (if it worked for some cars in the first place). But if it worked for a fixed code car, you might be able to build a cell phone application, reading the key signal at one place with one cell phone, sending the data to another phone by the car and from that phone to the car's IR receiver. Could work?

But how much does it help, except if you forgot your key into the car (which I guess Corkscrew mentioned in the first post).
