I have always found w126's to be quite. At least I dont remember noticing noise. My uncle's 300D though was a bit more truck sounding. Still an awesome car.

I don't know the real answer, and I'm not sure anyone does. But if we're gonna limit ourselves to the 80s, which is a good thing, then I'd say the most expensive cars were the quietest - got to be the late 80's w126s. I'd be the 1990/1991 were the best.

I would imagine the new S-class to be the quietest ever MB, being very new and luxurious!

The most expensive one, wouldn't you think?

S-class.

If you include all years, the quietest Mercedes I have ever driven was the 140 series....I think it was the double pane glass.

Another vote for the W140 S-Class.

However, for the '80s I'd have to say the 420/560 configurations.

Tire noise was the biggest issue, as there was ZERO wind noise and ZERO engine noise (as in any "like new" S-Class). The W140 muffled the tire noise even more with its extensive sound proofing.

My 1998 C230 is very quiet. I cannot hear outside traffic when traveling at speed. Spooky.
