Question Extended warranty-now or later?

We'll be purchasing our new E in a week or two and wondered if anybody had feedback on when to purchase the extended warranty. I know we want it and plan to keep the car for a long time. Better to fork out now and be covered or wait till near the end and renew? Any input is appreciated.

The price adjusts upwards every year, check with your dealer, and make your descision. I got mine at the end of the first year, have not broken even yet but have 3 years to go.

Never have, never will buy an extended warranty, but I wouldn't turn down a car that had one. They are insurance policies, a huge profit item for the seller and the insurance companies will always win in the end. There are certainly cases where owning an extended warranty pays for itself, but in the grand scheme of things the consumer loses. I've never owned a car where the warranty would have paid for itself. Now we all spend our money on things that others may find ridiculous, so since it's your money, you have to make the choice. If it makes you sleep better at night, then you have to do what makes sense to you.

The factory offered contracts offer the best coverage since the work is done by the dealer with Mercedes parts. All plans are not equal and a lot of them are as worthless as the paper they are printed on with insurance plans going out of business every couple of years to escape paying for repairs or to duck lawsuits. An MB plan is much more expensive that a lot of the junk plans out there but at least you know they will stay in business to the end of the contract.

The cost of the plan goes up by a big margin after the first year in service, so, I would advise waiting to see how trouble free the car is in your first year with it and how well the dealer handles any warranty issues. If the dealer is honoring his commitment to maintain your car to your satisfaction and the car develops issues before the first year is up I would strongly recommend getting the extended coverage unless you plan on replacing the car before the warranty runs out. The extended contract time gives you a chance to use the car for a longer period than the original warranty lasts and still be assured it can be repaired if any problems crop up before you are ready to sell it or trade it in.

Mercedes builds some of the most advanced car designs out there and that fact alone may not make it a better choice from the repair standpoint because that complexity makes them very expensive to fix if something goes wrong and the amount of time required to discover the faults and the parts needed to effect a repair are out of this world.

Potato Chip, custom canuter valve, low-friction muffler bearings, synthetic turn signal fluid, Hi-Definition Progressive Scan Wiper Blades.
Law-makers are supposed to regulate in the interest of the public as opposed to regulating in the interest of the regulated party.
If it says Pratt and Whitney on the outside it better say Martin Baker on the inside.

I purchased it based on experience with repair costs on previous MBs, and amount of warranty work.
One major thing and you will recover the costs.

Based on our experience with our Volvos, and the MBs are much more tech intensive, we will definitely want that assurance or insurance as the case may be. We do plan on keeping the car longer than the original warranty. The Volvo extended warranty has more than paid for itself. My CPO ML is in the shop right now and they have replaced the power steering pump, a window molding and they're working on the notchy/sticky throttle. I am very particular and hope this is just working the bugs out. Of course, they're bugs I didn't expect to have in a CPO vehicle just purchased in December. The original warranty expires in March, and we've extended it to 7 yrs, 100k. I'll probably just go for it now, as it'll be a big chunk of change to come up with a year from now. I'll just hope that, unlike our XC90 we do keep it for many years. I'm driving an 07 E350 as a loaner and it's awesome. What a fantastic car! Thanks for the feedback.

On a Mercedes, I believe in having a factory-backed warranty (new car, extended, or CPO).

I bought a CPO, and extended the 12/100,000 to 24/100,000 (through Daimler-Chrysler) for $1845. I financed the car for 24 months, so this made sense to me. They "folded" the additional cost into the amount financed so that spread out the cost for me.

Like Peter said, I had a previous Benz with no warranty that ended up costing me a lot of money in repairs.

Good Luck!
