Opinions on '95 320E ?

Hello,

Currently I have a '95 Acura Integra GSR which looks good and runs great. I have the opportunity to buy a 1995 Mercedes 320E for a good price and was looking for opinions on the reliability and performance of this model. It has a straight 6-cylinder motor, automatic transmission, leather seats, aluminum wheels, power windows, etc. The mileage is 107k, and the car appears in very good condition. I guess my real question is how expensive will it be to maintain this vehicle and what sort of problems should I anticipate given the mileage and age?

Many thanks for any help.

Frank

Please access the W124 forum, you will gain more info there.
Very solid cars indeed, some say the pinnacle of MB quality - but the
service history of the car will be what shapes its future.
107k is low for these cars, they were designed to cover 3 times that amount
and more in their lifetime. However, the M104 3.2 motor is not without its
issues - hopefully the W124 crowd can assist you.

124 body is judged as the last "bulletproof" body Mercedes built. When you look on youtube, you'll find some video from British "5-th gear" when even grenade, canon and monster truck combined had a hard time to kill one.
Those engines supposable can last even 500,000 miles. Straight six is much easier to work on than V6. In case you'd have to, what is unlikely in next 10, or 20 years.

I had an E320 with 250k miles on it when i sold her and she ran like a top and still does!!

Look for the wiring harness, TBA(throttle body actuator), head gasket to be replaced soon if they have not, look at about 700 for the harness, 300 for a rebuilt TBA(Mercedes Benz Accessories) and the head gasket about 800? The body is rock solid and the materials are top notch. I miss mine a bunch, just change the oil often, trans fluid flushes, and change the brake fluid once a year.

Hope this helps!

Chris

Compared to your Honda, you'll find the Mercedes a maintenance nightmare.

OTOH, in every other way it's a better car--for which you might be expected to pay by doing the right things maintenance-wise.

Opinions on '95 320E ?

Guy's,

Thanks for your replies so far. I'll check out the head gasket and the other things you've mentioned and go from there. It sounds like this is a pretty solid vehicle from your answers.

Happy Weekend!

The 124 chassis was the one that many automotive writers in the 80's & 90's felt was THE car to have were you to be involved in a serious traffic accident.

'87 300E: sold after 11years @ 230k & still on the road somewhere in rural Tennessee.
