Mercedes doesn't approve them because at some point in the time the chrome WILL start to flake off with the possible loss of the seal at the bead, causing sudden and potentially dangerous and damaging consequences. So it's a safety thing with them. Maybe it's a CYA thing, but that's their stance.

Sokoloff,
Thank you, I had not heard of any manufacture not approving of chrome wheels. That does explain MB's stand. I do see chrome wheels on a lot of cars, and I am not sure if I am going to go this route yet, just looking into my options.

I bought used chrome wheels for my E320 wagon. They are the same wheels as my originals with flat finish, so now I am confused. Is the chrome original from MB, or did the seller got them chromed?
This way, or another they hold the air for last 1/2 year and I really like the chrome look with white body.

Hey, RLS.

With some body styles and some colors (black, white and red in particular) I think that chrome wheels look really good.

I've yet to see any chrome wheel that looks other than horrible on a brilliant silver or desert silver MBZ of any body style.

LA Tire and Wheel's been around a while, a friend with an Audi bought some aftermarket wheels from them and he's very happy with them.

There are lots of companies that will exchange your wheels for identical ones -- only chromed. When there is curbing etc., they repair the damage before they are chromed.

Just my .02, but if you want to go with chrome, then do it and let the naysayers neigh. That's one of the great things about owning a car: you can customize it how YOU like it.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

Hi gregs210,
My 560SL is Smoke Silver in color. I think I agree with what you are saying about color. When I bought the car it had 3 wheels with curb rash, not much but enough to keep it from being perfect. Actually I am the only one that notices them. I stopped at a wheel repair shop today to get a price and to see their work. The repairs that I saw were very good except for the paint, looked like it had a clear coat, very high gloss. Almost looked plastic. I asked about matching paint and they told me "it would be close". Keep hoping someone will put a nice set of rims on Ebay. Still don't know which way I will go yet. I have seen pictures of SL 's with chrome and I like some but not others. Hate to spend $ and won't like them. Thanks for the reply.
Bob

It seems LA wheel and tire sell the ultimate 560SL chrome rim.

I think those wheels look great in chrome on the car. I son't car for the chrome with the wheit, but the silver with the chrome looks great. I would like to see more pics of the silver car alone.

They don't approve of them because the process of chroming actually weakens the alloy and increases the risk that the wheel will break. The fact that the chrome starts to peel at some point causing air leaks is just another reason not to do it. I have never chromed wheels but have bought a few cars that already had them - but will never do so again. If a car has chrome wheels I will not consider it for purchase.

I don't understand, what part of the chroming process would cause this? Is heat involved?

(They don't approve of them because the process of chroming actually weakens the alloy)
