I have a name!!

Anyone ever notice that certain people only know you by the type of car you drive? I'm not saying that it's only Mercedes owners, but other high end/modified cars as well. Sometimes I hear things like "oh you the guy that drives the Benz?" Other times if I have a different car, it's "where's the car?" It's like they only know you or care to talk to you because of the type of car you drive. Is this a status thing? Sometimes it feels like there's a certain level of respect that goes along with driving a certain type of car, at other times it feels like they respect the car (i.e money) before or instead of respecting you. Sometimes people at work ask me "hows the car" Hows the car? I am fine b!tches, how are you? No one used to ask how my maxima was doing. It's as if I showed up somewhere wearing a t-shirt and jeans driving a nissan, that I would not be looked at in the same way as if I'm tapered up and driving a Mercedes.

It's possible that you need to define yourself a bit more clearly to those around you.

Some of us are defined to others by our profession, some of us by our interests and
hobbies or sporting achievements.
For example, i know 4 people called Steve. There's Steve the Photographer, Snowboarding Steve
who just shattered his kneecap, Steve my old Boss, and of course 'Swedish' Steve (just married
& moved to Gothenburg).
The last time i heard, two of them drove Bimmers, one rode a bicycle and one is currently
getting about in a wheelchair.
I doubt most of their friends even remember what car they have, and for all i know
they could have changed them for something else.

If you spend a lot of time doting on your car, talking about how great it is to others
and showing up absolutely everywhere in it, you're gonna be known as Fancy Mercedes Guy.

You are right to think that a car can help change or improve your image, but there
really must be more to you than that?
Maybe start by printing a T-shirt that says:
I've sold that fancy Mercedes.

(ps, sounds like some of the women at your workplace fancy a 'ride' in that CLS)

Cue Jim Croce's timeless classic "I've got a name".

If you start wearing this around the office, you won't be the guy with the Mercedes any more...

I find that here in the UK when I drive around in my 1989 VW Polo I get disgusting looks of Mercedes owners/drivers - which makes me laugh to myself considering my other car is a W140 600SEL (chipped,AMG's etc).
Myself I drive a german car/s purely for the build quality and second for the reliability !

I guess I feel like some people respect money more they respect people. I notice it now more than before because like most everyone on this board, I bought a Benz. It's more of a society thing rather than a Mercedes thing. OK I have vented, thank you so kindly for your attention!

I understand what you're saying. When I first got my CLK, there were a few women in the office who suddenly started talking to me (where I was invisible before). One guy came up to me after a month and said "Hey, I just got the Pontiac GT. I'll blow your doors off now". I never even exchanged a hello with this guy, let alone challenged him to a race. Some other woman here felt the need to tell me that she'd never date a guy that drives a Benz because of "what it stands for" (which I still haven't figured out what it supposedly stands for). Again, a woman I didn't know that felt the need to but into a conversation I was having about dating.... completely unrelated to cars. I can't count how many times I've heard "Not all of us can afford to roll in a Benz"... (I got mine used - it wasn't that much money).

There's a huge difference in how people react when they associate your car to you. Driving my wife's bone stock Honda, people tend to let me merge lanes more, they're more polite when I'm exiting a parking lot onto a street, etc. I get cut off much more when I'm driving the MB and oversized trucks that love to crawl up 2 inches behind me at lights, and guys getting pissed off when they catch their girl looking over.

If anything, I just use it as an indicator of people's priorities. If a woman wants to date me just because of the car, she's completely shallow in my opinion and gets treated as such. Other people know me for who I am and don't care if I'm driving the Benz or a Honda.

I thought it was just me. Things that I have also noticed.

1) Women look at me and smile
2) Guys give me a shitty look
3) I dont get let in to merge
4) The valet is nicer to me
5) nice cars park next to mine
6) Drive trough women flert more

All in all, not bad

My car was $18K!
