You missed my point AML. I think the factories are still in Britain, managed by Brits, and the workforce is British.

Rolls-Royce and Bentley will always be perceived as British automobiles, no matter who owns them. I was just joking around with GermanStar there in response to his comment about a "German car".

Last hand assembled Benz

Thank you JFlyer,

That shoots a hole right through my theory then because if 1991 is the last year, that means that the pretty highly regarded W124 E-class and W140 S-class series were robot-built, at least partially.

Industry-wide, a truly hand built automobile seems to be rare these days. I know the Maybachs and SLRs are, and probably Ferraris and a few other exotics. The only problem with those is how much they cost.

Being mechanically inclined, I can tell, that we are comparing apples to oranges.
I used to own 83 model of MB. The only computerized thing in it were, cruise control, AC, automatic transmission.
The most common failure in those models were ......
cruise control, AC and automatic transmission.
Today's, I mean last decade models in my opinions are more computers with wheels attached. Mechanically still bulletproof.
Sure lot of stuff got build lighter, what also meant cheaper. Can't compare cast gear shifter cover from 70's (have one of those as a souvenir) with plastic flaps on today's car.
Than from what I was able to compare 40 grands for MB E-classe 25 years ago was more than most US citizen's annual salary. Today for lot of people that is just pocket money.

WOW: Great thread! Can we imagine what an '86 300E would cost if built exactly the same way today? Katjek has it right: our newer cars are rolling computers. If I have a feature that does not work or work right or the engine is not running smoothly, I just pull over & restart the engine. My Microsoft, er, Benz, re-boots itself & acts right. Although my '98 E320 does not have as heavy duty components as my '87 300E, the newer one drives better, is more comfortable, and gets 30% better gas mileage. The newer one will last just as long as the older one albeit a couple more throw-away replacement components.

'87 300E: sold after 11years @ 230k & still on the road somewhere in rural Tennessee.

'94 C220 with 93k totalled 10/06 by hit & run broadsiding monster truck: not a scratch or bruise for me

Kajtek1 the friend of mine who was buying the mid 80's s class's was paying about the same as a new 2000 sq ft house. That would be around 300k here today. That is why so many of us regular people own benz's today. He owned a company with 1000 or so employee's and is in the top 40 richest in Canada. Today every Joe smuck owns one and I am a Joe Smuck. The dealer must be annoyed to have deal with regular people instead of money no object people.

Why not? They are German by blood. Windsor is their assumed name, their real last name is Saxe-Coburg.

jodyt: I prefer the E320; great balance of plenty of power & gas mileage. It's nice when a Camry owner tells me they get 30 mpg on the highway. I can say I do to. Am sure the V8's are nice but not what I'm looking for or need.
With all our comments on cars' reliablilty, it had been seen coming for many years that lesser manufacturers would have exceptional build quality & they do, thus the gap between a Camry & an E320 is smaller than it used to be. Still, the Benz shows it's engineering & is still the best car to be in if & when you have a bad accident.
It is amazing to see so many more Benz' on the road than when I first got one in '93; the exclusive feel is not the same.

Good point flyboyike - I completely forgot about that! I have forgotten how the House of Windsor came to power in the UK, but aren't they related in some fashion to the House of Hannover in Germany?

Just a guess here but if memory serves, most of the European royals are related because they are descendants of Queen Victoria. But who was the German "seed" - Prince Albert?

The perception of MB in the UK is unfortunately similar to their
image in the US. The main bugbear here is customer service - MB dealerships
packed with rude young men who know f**k-all about anything built before 2000.
Coupled with the embarrassment that was the W210 - BMW, Lexus and Audi have been laughing all the way to the top of the executive car reviews for the past 10 years.

Quality is visibly on the rise, and MB are trying to edge their way into the performance market with the magnificent AMG cars, but the prospect of
a new BMW M or Audi RS still gets the UK motoring press very excited.

AMGs seem to be engine first, car later - quite formulaic, especially
as one engine makes its way into about six different classes of Mercedes.
BMW and Audi appear to concentrate more on the whole package, with
M and RS cars feeling more like 'ground-up' developments.

Rolls & Bentley are no longer considered 'de riguer' for the English Aristocracy.
They're as likely to be seen in a VW Phaeton W12 or Jaguar, as well as countless S600s.
Besides - Jay-Z, P-Diddy and Fiddy Cent have more in common with the
'brand' that RR has become...
