Question "lifetime sealed transmission" and your fluid change experience?

I know that there has been a number of threads about the lifetime transmission fluid, the necessity to change it, the confusion that's going on with dealer comments on the issue, etc. I have a 2001 E320 with 105,000 km on it, and I was thinking of getting a fluid change myself for a while.

But first I was wondering how many people out there have already done the fluid change/flush on their lifetime trannies, and what was their experience doing so: driving results, dealer reaction, cost, etc. If you have already done it, please share your experience (there are enough threads out there listing opinions, what I am looking for is real life experience with the matter.)

92% of all people suck at math. I am a part of the 9% who don't.

Current Cars:
2008 ML320 CDI 4MATIC (W164) - Silver/Black
2008 C230 4MATIC (W204) - White/Black

Past Cars:
2002 E320 (W210) - Silver/Black - Sold due to rust

It's more political than anything.

For 2006 the requirement is a one-time-only change at 39K miles.

Hard to believe the transmission was changed between 2005 and 2006.

Seems MB just wants to stick with what they said when.

My SA told me it used to be 100k and now he said MB is telling them to change it every 50k.

one.bofh,
You were following the thread I started to which Jawhawk has just alluded. There are accounts from 4-5 people there who had this done, including me.

The mainenance manual that comes with a 2006 E-class specifies the 39K change.

I did it.

The out the door, the price was $338. The dealer recommended it. My price was a little higher than MM's price. His dealer probably likes him more than mine likes me. And since I know me better than most people, his dealer has good reason to.

The dealer is the ONLY place I'd consider allowing to do change the fluid. The fluid level is temperature dependant (confirmed with the Star Diagnostic Box) and has to be checked twice at two different temperatures. The WIS says if the fluid level is off, damage, death, and a horricifally calamitous driving experience will follow.

Being that the dealer insured the fluid level was spot on, and that my transmission was in top shape when it went in, there was no observable difference in driving. Except for the part about the life of my transmission possibly being doubled, I don't think it made much of a difference.

Oh Marcus, how quickly you forget! You had them do the service right, mine was the half-assed job using only 4 qts/lts of ATF Yes, I paid less, but received less. I would feel much better having paid your $338 and receiving all fresh fluid.

Haha, I do have a good relationship with my dealer, but I purposely cultivated that with everyone I could in the service department. Simple really, I treat them with respect and joke around with them (I always wait for my car so after I check out the eye candy on the used lot there's not much else to do anyway).

Hey, protocol requires that I emphasize the desireable aspects of your service. You got the most professional has-affed job available. Next summer you can get the half.
