Better night vision!!

Wanted to share: At 47 y/o I was hoping for better lighting without spending big bucks. I replaced my low beams with Sylvania Silverstar's for $35: a great improvement! 1/3 more distance, better peripheral, and a much brighter fill area. The fogs barely make any difference now. Drove 2k+ miles at night roundtrip to Fort Lauderdale and really appreciated the difference.

'87 300E: sold after 11years @ 230k & still on the road somewhere in rural Tennessee.

I'm on a couple of other forums and the reviews on the Silverstars are quite mixed. The good is the output of the bulb is great. The downside people are reporting is the life of the bulb. It seems many people were getting 6-9 months of life. Pretty short for a $35 bulb. I don't know if this has been discussed on this forum yet as I haven't done a search.

true, the silverstars are great, bright.

however, i haven't had a single silverstar bulb last longer than 12 months. this was on my older toyota which had daytime running lights (basically, low-beams at 50% at minimum) all the time.

switched to PIAA Extreme Whites which cost significantly more but they never needed replacement compared to the silverstars, after 1.5 years.

silverstars are good for high beams, which you rarely use - for low-beams and fogs, just pay for the PIAAs.

Purchased the same bulbs you mentioned above at a close out sale, just to try them out. I must say i'm very happy with them.
Put them in last summer and if i get 12 month out of them, then i'm not going to complain.

Today will be tomorrows history, make it count.

Sylvania SilverStar - Good Deal at Amazon

Hi All, I just purchased at the Sylvania SilverStar H7 for the hi and lo beam and the H1 for the fogs. H7's were $14.95 for the single pack vs $39.95 for the twin pack. Big decision ..but was able to figure it out...selected the 4 single pkgs. The fogs were $19. 95 per pkg. No deals on this one. However, both items qualified for Free Shipping....and I got a $20. discount because I had a total $$ value over $99. { My total was $99.60 } So checkout price was $79 plus change. Good deal or not for the 6 bulbs? Also, Sylvania has rebates on their website for the Silverstar ( $5.00 ) and Ultra ($10 ).

I'm surprised to see so much hoopla over Sylvania silverstars when they are utter garbage (well..ok, that's a little harsh, but they definitley aren't all they say to be, they burn quickly, they have plenty of negatives to them...ok...maybe they are utter garbage). Roundel (BMW CCA magazine...about twice as thick as The Star and comes every month) tested these lately. They are indeed brighter than run of the mill no-name lights, but they are not even as bright as Sylvania's own XtraVision lights. Then of course there are better bulbs than those out there. You want the best, talk to Dan at Daniel Stern Lighting Consultancy and Supply. He's got the good +50 bulbs, and if you have an older MB he has Cibie's which make the same light as Euros at 1/10th the price (but keep the US look).

Best to get European (Osram) rather than Sylvania Silverstars.

Unlike latter, are specifically advertised as lasting as long as conventional halogens.

And, they're white, not blue.

Power Bulbs - autobulbs, autolamps, xenon headlights, car bulbs, headlight bulbs, osram silverstar, silver star, philips vision plus, philips blue vision, bluevision

Off topic, but Osram is the brand of bulb we used to sell for medical-grade microscopes. As far as those went, they lasted a reasonable amount of time, and bulb burn-out was probably the least frequently occurring problem we faced (we repaired and cleaned them for people too).
