Question Shop Manuals on CD

I'm looking for voices with experience, experience with service manuals on disk. Which ones are good and which are not. I like manuals that are very thorough and have clear diagrams & pics. Complete wiring and vacuum diagrams are a must as well as torque specs and automatic trans info. I don't consider Chiltons to be a quality publication. Haynes is usually better but not better enough, although I haven't seen what either has to offer for Mercedes. I've a hunch what I'm looking for was written in German so the quality of the translation is important too. So if you've used one or mare of these, please tell me what you liked, or what you would change about them, or which I should avoid all together. All input will be greatly appreciated.

BTW, it's for a '78 450SL.

TIA, Chris

Chris from Whidbey Island

Funny you use plural, i.e. manuals.

Just buy the Mercedes manual.

I would post this or search the R170 forum. I am sure your dealership can get it for you or try the mercedes benz website. Check out part #P-2700-170-06 to see if it is the correct one for your vehicle.

You can often find WIS on eBay being sold as 2 or 3 DVD sets that cover all models from the past 20 years.

I have no idea about their authenticity. As they come burned on blank DVD+R, I assume that they have been pirated from genuine M-B originals.

As a number of members have discovered, the WIS DVD software is a big pita to install, with up to 70 separate instructions. Once installed it still needs one disc to stay in the DVD reader. If you are up for a challenge, I would say have a go. You will only pay about $20.

Mine works fine on MS XP HE SP3.

Yes, these would be pirated copies.

Also some copies are very easy to install while others are almost impossible. It is better to get a copy from someone who has already successfully installed. I guess it all depends on how they pirated (got around the copies. I heard the new ones are increasingly more difficult to install.

About "Once installed it still needs one disc to stay in the DVD reader.", it is probably the user choose not to copy the files onto hard drive. I have the 2005 WIS and one of the steps was to choose where to store the file, hard drive or not. Once I choose hard drive, then I never need the DVDs again.

Mine does not need a disc to remain in the reader. It's big and ugly to load the first time, but once in, it works fine.(in my case)

It was a 3 DVD set from the UK.
