air intake coupling rubber to plastic

I have a 1999 clk with a 3.2 engine. When replacing the MAF the rubber air intake hose disconnected from the hard plastic manifold in the rear and refuses to go back together. There is a metal or plastic retaining ring that joins the two pieces. It will join about half of the opening but no amount of convincing will get it fully conected. Duct tape is working for now.

Has anyone run into this problem? Is there a trick?

A MB mechanic said to buy the both pieces and the coupling as a unit and install.

There nust be a better way.

Did you try putting an extremely thin coat of lubricant like silicone spray on the surfaces that must mate/slip together (don't spray it directly, spray it on to a paper towel and apply with that)? That made it very easy for me. Just DO NOT use a lot and do not let any get on the inside surfaces of the tubing (you don't want it migrating on to the MAF and ruining it).
