The Holy Grail

Yeah, im the united states -USA : luxo-high price, expensive parts but elsewhere sounds about right. They seriously try to keep the prices as high as possible on cars, parts, even insurance and tax. All im saying is that theres a new invention called international trade and commerce that would allow enterprising young men like myself to purchase parts anywhere in the world. So if theres some website or source that you guys have in France or germany for cars and parts- Do us overtaxed americans a favor, help us to buy direct

I recently posted this in the 126's section. Now Ive come to find what a good idea this may be. If there are some guys around the world that get MB parts and cars at what you presume to be good prices, you could post your sources. Maybe, just maybe this will allow MB owners on this site such as myself to compare prices on mb parts to be able to get the best prices in the world. Im waiting to see what is posted for this.

And I thought id never use my head for more than a hat rack!

Actually, the dollar has devalued to the point that we regularly get calls from Germany for parts. There are some cheap knock-off companies in India and China you might want to look into, but other than that.......

The shipping costs from Europe ought to negate any savings from buying cheaper. Overtaxed Americans? I agree I pay too much in taxes, but ask the socialized European community what their tax rate is, and you'll be glad to be an American.

However, it's still a good idea; I'd like to see some of the Euro websites as well.

You guys in the US have been enjoying cheaper Benzes for decades.
You pay $65-70,000 USD for a car that costs us UK residents £55,000 GBP ($100,000).
As for parts, it's $350 USD vs £290 GBP for a VDO laptimer gauge in a 190E 2.3-16...

Don't get me (& the rest of the world) started on Gasoline prices.

Plus the fact that in most European countries the insurance
is calculated according the horsepower the engine has.
So all those big V8s, V10s and V12s are big bucks to insure.
Not forgetting(I know you didn't, Evo) ofcourse that fuel and gasoline
prices are 3 times higher in Europe then here in the US.

How does insurance work in the US?

Here in the UK, a number of factors are in play:

Engine Size.
Power Output.
Security rating (this includes how easy it is to change the car's identity).
Desirability to thieves.
Owner's credentials ie Occupation, Age, Postal (Zip) Code.

In the 1990s, many 'hot hatches' such as the Peugeot 205 GTi, Lancia Delta HF Integrale and Sierra Cosworth commanded insurance premiums as high as most supercars.
Jeremy Clarkson (of BBC's Top Gear) tried to insure the Ford Escort RS Cosworth
and as a Journalist & Broadcaster (high-risk) was given an insurance quote of £25,000 GBP! The car had a retail price of £19,000...

A buddy of mine has a 1988 BMW E30 Alpina C2 2.7, and it's less money to insure than a standard E30 325i. His insurers tell him that Alpina are recognised in the UK as a manufacturer, and as such their products are very rare - easy to trace when stolen!

That's about it. Cost of repairs is another factor.
