The subject of the so-called "Chrysler mistake" has been debated on here quite a bit, and there is no simple answer.
Daimler AG apparently felt that merging with Chrysler Corporation had some financial advantages for the combined companies. The only "advantage" I can see, is that the CC vehicles are getting better. Unfortunately, this seems to have created a financial drain on the R&D money they are spending on the Mercedes models.
Although they are not doing very well right now, I think the Ford acquistion of Jaguar and Volvo made more sense. But in reality, did the Fords get better as a result, or did the Jags and Volvos get worse?
Like lkchris wrote, Daimler would probably sell Chrysler if someone was willing to buy it. As is often said: "hindsight is 20/20".
