There is huge difference in traction between them. Few years ago I was driving a pickup and towing compact car on dolly going up from Truckee. On just moderate snow the rear wheels with cables were spinning, while the set was not moving.
I had to drop the dolly and go back to Truckee buying real chains.
Because you know the area, you'll understand. I mostly go up Hwy 50 to Heavenly, but if the conditions might require chains, I avoid 50 and go up 80 to Northstar or Squaw. Besides one time being caught in a major storm (I was at Boreal and they locked down 80), the only road that's ever needed chains is the one from Truckee to Squaw.

I have no problem driving 10 mph. I've heard that the CLK is really bad in the snow because of the rear being so light. I mostly just want to make sure I'm ok if I end up in another unexpected storm.

I grew up in 4-seasons and remember getting stuck in snow as no fun at all.
I usually go skiing to Sugar Bowl, so even when it is snowing during the day, I am not facing driving up the mountains. Ski trips is main reason why I bought 4-Matic. If you are going to Squaw for weekend, I think you suppose to invest in good chains. Never happened to me, but I can only image staying in mountain cabin when you have to be in your office on Monday morning and wake up Sunday to 2 foot of snow outside.

The storm at Boreal was a good scare. I was at the top of the moutain when they closed it. Couldn't see the ground. The only reason I got down ok was that the moutain is so small, I pretty much had the trail memorized. I had the entire family with me - mom, niece, nephews, sisters, wife... Caltrans closed 80 and Boreal closed the lodge, not caring about the people stranded in the parking lot. Mom ended up having a minor heart attack, the rental van got a frozen wheel hub, blah blah.... I haven't been back to Boreal since. I hit the gas past the CHP that was taking shelter under the freeway and hauled ass. I-80 can be kind of scary when you're the only one out there. To make it worse, I was told by management that it was very irresponsible to take the next day off work so I could go back up there to get my stranded mother out of the hospital in Truckee.
