help with my new 1986 sel

Having just been given a 1986 sel from my uncle who doesn't have room for the car and does not want to fix it I have some questions about some of the issues on the car. The engine runs great.

It is beautiful in and out and has 190000 miles on it. He was the original owner.

The transmission slips out of Second so it only drives in first. I have found a replacement for $ 500 with a warranty. I am very mechanically inclined and build my own race cars but MB's are new to me. Could a normal guy do the swap?
I have a shop manual on the way but, there is no info on the Transmissions according to the Seller of the manual.

I believe the cable is broken or froze for the retractable roof.(I hear it's a common problem). How hard is it to replace?

There is a broken lever for the hood release(under hood not in drivers compartment)
Where would i find these ?

Thanks for the help in advance

What kind of SEL? I am guessing a 300, 500 or 560, right?
You need to post in the W126 sub-forum if that's the case.
Replacing the transmission is not difficult to do but you need to lift the car up and make sure the trasmission does not come down crashing, it super heavy.
The sunroof has a release mechanism in the trunk on the driver side. Good luck!

What the Professor said. I wouldn't recommend opening up one of these transmissions, but swapping one out is no big deal. You can find a replacement hood tongue anywhere that sells Mercedes parts. It goes for about $3 as I recall...

I wouldn't exaggerate the weight of MB transmission.
Years ago (when I was younger) I replaced transmission on Oldsmobile sitting on the driveway. That thing was like 120 lb and I had no transmission jack, only my knees and elbows.
Lately I saw MB tranny removed in the shop. I could lift it and carry with one hand.
1986 probably doesn't have any electronic gizmo to give you a headache, maybe couple of vacuum tubings.
I'd say go for it.

thanks for the replies, For the record it's a 420. Couldn't turn it down.

He also has a 78 300d (diesel)I believe he wanted to get rid of. Motor runs great but, needs a clutch. Would have cost me $600 to get it to WI. Don't have a lot of room otherwhise I would have gotten both. In DC area if anyone is interested.
