Hi Linda Ann, welcome aboard, congrats on a wonderful car. These are wonderful cars, they are known as the W116 series (built from '73-80) and modeled after the experimental safety vehicle so they are really heavy tanks, very safe.
The worst thing about them was their propensity to rust, so have your boyfriend, husband, or mechanic inspect the car, especially at the jacking points, around the windshield and around the rear window seals, lift up the flor mats and carpets and look in the trunk too. Rust can be dangerous to the sructural integrity of the car. If there is TOO MUCH rust, frankly, the car might not be worth the expense to restore.
Does it have booklets and records? If so, look at them and see what needs to be done. When waas the last time the oil was changed, also the Power steering, brake fluids, auto.transmission fluids, coolant, fuel filters, air filters, are the drive belts good and the radiator hoses good? Is the car leaking oil?
You could even register at Mercedes Benz on line to get an idea of service intervals. And by the way, don't forget as a new Mercedes owner, they have a wonderful free hotline for any owner of any Mercedes no matter how old, you can call and ask questions, order an owners manual, or call for a free flat tire change, dead battery jump start or a couple of gallons of gas if you run out.
1-800-for-mercedes. 24 hours a day. Everything free, except the cost of gas of course.
If there are problems with the power windows, air conditioning, heater and defroster controls working? Does the lights, horn, signals, brakes, alignment check out OK, everything working? And by tghe way, is a good spare tire and jack with the car. If not, good to run to a junkyard and get them right away.
On the back parcel shelf is a compartment for a first aid kit, is it still inthe car?
If you are still with me, you would have no way to know that you asked your questions at the wrong place. Go back to the homepage and look for the W116 sedan section, that is where you need to post your questions, because that is where the experts for your particular model lurk.
I can guarantee you, females are scarce around here, so you will get lots of attention and help. But be polite and respectful, though, if you get nasty these guys can be pretty unforgiving and harsh
There is another wonderful resource available, it is www.*****************
which is a good place for your questions, and over there you should ask them in the "Diesel Discussion", those guys are Mercedes Diesel fanatics, and thaqt place is VERY busy, many of them are actually real life Certified Mercedes diesel technicians who work in or own repair shops, so while opinions might noit always agree, chances are you will get good advice and SAVE LOTS of money. Likewise, here. The Mercedesshop site also has a section for ordering parts and tires to look at. Things not specific to your modelof car can be asked on benzworld general discussion (here)
Each side also has a "light" side, that is for M-Shop, Off topic section, where current affairs, humor, family advice, and fellowship and travel advice is shared.
Great people there, though the off topic section here at Benzworld is fiercely political at times, and some of the regulars are rough characters and can be very rude, things are a bit looser there.
Just so you are aware, on both sites, protocol says that if you have a digital camera, you will be hearing a hue and cry to post pictures of your car right away.
In fact, when you re post your two questions about the smoke and dash of your car here in the W116 sedan section, try and post a picture of the dashboard, if you can. Though of course, I am certain anybody who sees your question about the light will have a car like yours and know what kind of lights you mean.
I am sure everyone would like to know how you came and got a car like this, and with your questions will help you save money and get it fixed up, it would help if you stated your home town. A thing about you or/and your car in your "signature" is always welcomed as a new member too (more protocol)
Mercedesshop also has an interesting section called good shops, so you can find a good mechanic in your home town.
