Breakdown after a one year stop

Good evening (and first of all sorry for my English...That's not my mother tongue!)
I've just bought a 230ce Sportline W124, 1991.
The guy who sold it to me is a very good friend (I fully trust him). He told me that the car was working perfectly well before he stopped it...one year ago! (outside).
We tried to restart it by connecting the battery to another car. It didn't work. So we changed the battery of the Mercedes and the car started... BUT : no idle, the car seems to work on 3 cylinders when it is at a low regime (it actually stalls). And the rev counter doesn't work. On the forums, I found similar breakdowns, and usually, it was due to the "over load" relay. So I bought a new one, but the problem remains the same. Could anyone help me?
PS : I checked the fuses in the fuse box, they are all OK.

Louis

PS : Since I am not a mechanic, please tell me the exact position of the parts you will mention.
THANK YOU !

First question; did you drain the old fuel (which has gone bad after sitting for 12 months) and replace it with fresh gas?

Thanks for your answers.
Well, that's right Marcusf, to begin with, I should have thought about the old gas! A nearly empty tank with some one year old fuel in it can't be a proper energy source for the engine. So, before pouring some new gas in the tank, I decided to change the fuel filter, in case rust or something would choke it... It can do no wrong, anyway. And it seems so easy when you read the forum...
Except that I have spent two hours trying to remove this stupid thing but it's just impossible! The screws of the "holder" of the pump/filter are dead and the filter wouln't slide out of its position.
I'll have a couple of glasses of Cognac and a (last?) cigarette before trying to destroy the screws with my drill.
I'll tell you if new gas/new filter (and new screws!!!) have sold the problem of my poor car.
Thanks again
Louis
