Did it first just ask for a code, without the "please wait"? If it asks for the security code, you cannot give any code. If you give a wrong code (a couple of times), the car would not accept even the right code, immediately. That's why it informs "please wait".
Once the radio has been on sufficiently long, you should be able to enter the code. Did the radio code still come with the car papers on a 2002 W211? If you do not have the code, the dealer would know it (and can advice how to enter the code).
If the car battery was not disconnected, I wonder could this happen just because of a bad battery (at cold start, although you cannot have "real" cold starts in Dublin)?
