I wish we could just leave the whole part about my son out of this. I was mostly concerned about what would be the best decision financially considering how well the '02 SL 500 holds up and and how much it depreciates.
However, I am not in any way concerned about the ethics of giving my son this car. However, since you all are so worried about whether he has earned my old car: he is 21, was valedictorian of his high school class, always made me proud in his work ethic in the sports he played, worked and had tough jobs in the summers, has a 4.0 GPA in college, has never been to jail, and has never had a speeding ticket. If anyone his age has "earned" this car, I think he might would qualify. Also, we live in a small town in Mississippi. I sincerely doubt he is going to be anywhere where he might be in danger of being shot from driving this car.
Any observations on whether I would be better off to 1. keep the car or 2. sell the car with 70,000 miles before it has any major problems and buy a new car?
