CLS Getting some serious competition

The Anti CLS Porsche Panamera

More pictures of the forthcoming Porsche Panamera have surfaced. This car is to be another milestone for Porsche, thought we could start some dialougue on what we can possibly expect. Carerra GT production has ended, so now Porshce can spend more time focusing on the Panamera.

Will partly share engines with the Cayenne, but will also come with a V10. The model is extremly important for Porsche and future Porsche models will probably be based on its platform. The car will probably become an instant classic setting a new performance standard for four door high performing saloons.

Panamera S with the Caynne V8 and the Panamera GT with a detuned CGT engine. An hybird engine would also be likely since Porsche is currently working one. The car was photographed testing in Germany at the legendary Nürburgring circuit. The ‘entry-level’ model will be powered by Volkswagen’s 3.5L six-cylinder engine with 300 bhp.

Porsche’s own direct-injection eight-cylinder petrol engine will be available in naturally-aspirated guise producing 350 bhp and a twin-turbo version, kicking out 560 bhp. To build the Panamera, which is currently under development and is scheduled to enter the market in 2009, in Leipzig, Porsche will be expanding the Plant significantly.

The plans involve construction of a new Production Hall with an area of approximately 25,000 square metres or 269,000 square feet and, at the same time, the extension of the existing Assembly Hall by the addition of a Pilot and Analysis Centre as well as a Workshop for Apprentice Training.

A Logistics Centre covering an overall area of 30,000 square metres or 323,000 square feet will also be built in the direct vicinity of the new Hall. Subject to approval by the authorities, construction is to start this September. The overall investment in new buildings and production facilities amounts to 120 million Euros.

BMW is set to unveil in 2009 a four-door coupe to rival the Mercedes CLS. Initially, there were rumours that the car could have reverse-opening rear doors, like the Mazda RX-8, but latest thinking suggests they will be conventional affairs similar to those on the Mercedes.
