Maybe Daimler will eventually follow the other manufacturers, but most german car makers find a good design and stay with it for a number of years. Once they do re-design a particular model it's a pretty radical departure from its predecessor. Look at the new S-Class for example: they ran with the other basic design from 2000-2006, then changed it quite a bit for 2007.
By the way, I'm a little confused about the W140s and the change to W220. Is there some overlap of the 1999 model years, or are all '99s W140 and all '00s W220?
No, not really there was no overlap of the 99 model, the W220 started end of 98 as 99 models, the last model of W140 was 98 not later than that.
