Synthetic or Regular Oil - the timeless question

I have a 1998 ML320 with 160,000 miles on it. I want this truck (not SUV ) to last past 200K. I have heard opinions both ways on the type of oil. I can't do the changes myself (live in apartment) however, I can buy oil to supply to mechanic.

What is the recommended oil for my truck?
(get as detailed as you wish)

Brand / type / regualar / synthetic

I have heard that there are fires with regular oil, is that true?

I would use what was originally in your car, but this can be difficult to determine for certain 1998 models.

For my former 98 E430, I was told it had been imported with synthetic motor oil, but that was because it was a later one. Earlier ones had regular oil in them. This is according to a certain dealer's service manager, I have never verified this using another source.

As you stated, this is a timeless question. I have 2 older cars that I have chosen to use conventional oil because of the above reason. However, I do think synthetic oil has been proven to be a better choice, for several reasons.

SYNTHETIC OIL. This is what should've been in the ML from the factory.
